I'm not quite sure how this works exactly, but apparently if one kills the boss on 3-4 while it's attacking, then the robot will keep attacking. If you die to the attack then the robot will have no health, but will continue to attack as if it did. In this state, you can actually make the head disappear by blasting it enough back and forth.
