Update 5: Infinite Wisdom is here!   10/05/2017

Hey everyone, We’re back with another update that really mixes some stuff up. An entirely new challenging mode, a rebalance of the entire game to go with the rework of the new leveling progression numbers, ability to do the co-op intro online, faster PVP rounds, language translations and more! With the rebalance you’ll find that your fighters are dealing even more damage as they gain experience. All balance changes are retro-active meaning you do not have to worry about starting over or starting new characters in order to experience that – they’re all dynamically applied to what you already have! Feel free to check out what we’ve changed in the list below, and as always – please leave us feedback about anything you find noteworthy. As always, the main Story (although not included in this update) is being developed alongside all these improvements we have been releasing. Check out our blog for the full changelist: http://blog.thebehemoth.com/2017/09/28/update-5-infinite-wisdom-is-here/

  1. (Written by Aaron) Featured Arena: IDK by Absorbing Beatle Absorbing Beatle may not know what they have, but we certainly do: this week's Arena Feature! Ball game is one of those arena types that often benefits from a simpler and balanced layout, as the mode itself has enough nuance to keep things interesting. IDK embraces this level playing field, but isn't afraid to mix it up; note the key use of puzzle blocks, rewarding players who can truly keep their head in the game! Here are some ideas of what lies ahead: Finally, in lieu of real food and fireworks, we're celebrating this Fourth of July weekend with some Sausage and Boom! [Featured Arena 4-July-2014]
  2. (Written by Aaron) Football (or Soccer, I 'spose) may be all the rage on some of the larger continents out there, but here on the Isle of The Behemoth, we are a bit more captivated with an alternative that is both cuter and more deadly: Footbasket! Featured Arena: Footbasket by Bloofus Just in time for the July 16th BattleBlock Theater Ball Game Tournament (viewable at Twitch.TV!), Bloofus' foot-focused opus is full of fun and original takes on the classic "Ball Game". Don't be scared off by some of the more death-laden courts found early in the playlist; as things progress, the path to the basket will become complicated by everything from rocket packs to fluffy ferdinands. With so much stage magic going on, you may find yourself scoring less often, but each score you do make will really and truly count! And now a sneak peek behind the curtain! Finally, in lieu of real food and fireworks, we're celebrating this Fourth of July weekend with some Sausage and Boom! Happy Independence Day!
  3. Woohoo! It's Friday! We've brought this Arena playlist back in Arena Features and we've unlocked several prisoners in honor of the Pit People Early Access Announcement. If you don't have these already, you can unlock these special prisoners on XBLA AND Steam by heading to an online area in BattleBlock Theater: The 3rd Special Unlock is specific to each game platform. (XBLA Only) (Steam Only) All of these unlocks were based on characters from all of our games, so it seems appropriate for this occasion! Here are the original descriptions of each Arena playlist: random levels by SHANKKMAKER (XBLA) SuperHiperMegaL by Albertrivers (Steam) Happy playing!
  4. [Written by Erin] It's a well known fact that red and blue have had a rough history with one another, starting with the Chroma Wars of 1612. Thankfully, the two troublesome tints have since found a better way to express their monochromatic angst... blood sports! Arena Feature Red vs Blue by Brutal Berserk Whether you're a red-blooded man or a blue-blooded lady, there's a lot to love in this weeks mix of the ever-popular Ball and King arena modes. "Prison Ball" starts things off with a tightly paced arrangement that allows players to take shots from a variety of lava-launched angles, followed by my favorite King level of the playlist: "Torero Party". Imagine a game of chicken, on a Slip'N Slide, with a deadly man-eating monster in the very middle. Fun! Later on, we have some King blocks on the side of some kind of industrial mulcher/drowning machine, and "Garbage City" is your typical cramped tunnel of doom, but Mr. Berserk keeps things interesting thanks to some well placed lava and gum blocks. And finally, in a move that I'd like to see in more arena playlists, the final level is just an opportunity to say "to heck with the rules!!" and beat each other up. If you and yours are like my bestest besties and I, you need that sort of thing every so often. Let's all enjoy some screenshots while we contemplate the inherent violence of man! Did you know that earlier this week was Puppy Day? It was and you probably missed it! But today is nothing, and in honor of that comes a prisoner who represents nothing at all: Meebs! My man Meebs is adorable, despite having huge eyesockets instead of huge eyes. You'd think that would make a bigger difference. Huh. [Featured Arena Playlist 27-MARCH-2015]
  5. (Written by Erin) There's a reason that most sports keep their courts nice and sportsmanly, clear and predictable: they lack imagination! I mean, you guys drawing those white lines in the grass, why not learn to live a little! Maybe add a squiggle now and then, or drop a litter of cats on the field. Perhaps a rocket launching robot or two. Stretch your arms a bit and see where your inspiration takes you! To jail, probably. But don't let that stop you, we've got some great accomodations here at Battleblock Theater! Even better, you may get to meet this week's Furbottom Feature winner and we think you guys might have a lot in common... Arena Feature: Basketbrawl by rpvarela See, rpvarela isn't afraid to take an old fashioned ball court and just FLOOD the heck out of it. But hey, look at all the floating fuzzy bears to help you! And sure, you might be trapped in a box with a killer robot and but look at that giant raccoon to hide in! Hm. If you do make it out to the stands, our hotdog vendors may be out of hotdogs this week, but we've replaced them with a delicious new treat! Brand-spanking new and available only on Steam, this little performer is set to play a breakout role in The Behemoth's yet-to-be-titled Game 4! Are you excited? I am excited!! ...or that could just be the sugar-high from all those cupcakes I ate earlier. Why are you adorable jerks so delicious?? [30-Jan-2015]
  6. Written by Erin Arena Feature: Soc- Basketball by Leedin You know, prisoners make this mistake all the time. "Let's play some soc-- basketball." Sure, it can be easy to make that mistake, but when you have an international collection of prisoners, some of whom call soccer, "football"... well, it's just a mess. Of course, "basketball" is wrong too... unless my high school team was playing the game really, really badly. Like, NO ONE was hit by lasers. Not once. Weird, right? Thankfully, we can overlook this minor slip-up in the title because this week's arena designer knocked it completely out of the park. Or should I say theater? All I know is that there was metaphorical ball here, BUT NOW IT'S GONE. Thoughtful, varied design keeps the action fresh and yet still in your hands, which is essential because things being in your hands is a key aspect of carrying a ball to your enemy's net. I did once see a prisoner carry it in their mouth instead, but three or four other players had recently exploded while holding that same ball. It's the kind of aftertaste that just doesn't wash away after one tooth brushing, let me tell you. Now, while you wash THAT flavor out of the mouth of your imagination, take a look at these nifty preview shots! You know what I use to wash tastes out of my mouth, imaginary or otherwise? I eat donuts! I'm serious! These delicious little doughbabies are at serious risk whenever they are around me. If you want Donuts here to survive, you'd better go online and unlock him quick.. 7. The results are in! After we went through over 90 playlists made by the community (good job to everyone!), our judges have finished selecting the winner of the Arena Playlist Creation Contest for both Steam and XBLA. Winners will be contacted via email so we can send them an autographed Hatty Hattington bust and their playlists will be featured this week in BattleBlock Theater! Without further ado…here is the winner for XBLA and honorable mentions, with descriptions by Mase and our level design crew: XBLA Winner Arcadia by MeltedCow Bang for your buck — that’s what this playlist offers its players. Many of the levels in this playlist feel like two levels in one! Switches, paths and judicious use of clever block placement generate levels that can evolve and change as you play or offer great risk/reward benefits as you decide which paths to take. Be sure to check out the final stage in this playlist where you can adjust your difficulty, strategy and even your score objective. It’s the ultimate expression of this particular concours ultimate playlist! Honorable Mentions HEY LOOK HERE by TxC Artist Fancy some King-of-the-Soul-Snatcher-Hill? How ‘bout trying this here Grab-the-Horse-Gold. One of the great secrets of the level editor of BattleBlock Theater is that you can combine the scoring mechanisms from other game modes by simply placing them in your game type. This creator discovered the secret and crafted a great revelation through the level editor. Creating levels for just a single game mode can be difficult enough, but this playlist has great options for your combination game type needs! CaptureTheDuck by LevelDesignGuy LevelDesignGuy created a new game mode within our humble yet powerful level editor and then managed to make 15 fantastic stages for it. This Furbottom’s Feature veteran managed a spectacular display of his understanding and intimacy with the mechanics of BattleBlock Theater. A fantastic demonstration of how far you can push the Battleblock Theater level editor! Congrats to the winners! We’ll be featuring the honorable mentions in the future, but you can play them now if you go to the Community Theater. For this week, we’re featuring the winning playlists and giving BattleBlock Theater players a special unlock befitting of this occasion: Purrham Furbottom! All you’ll need to do is load up the game and go to an online area to unlock this gentleman. (Now, go play this Arena Feature! The designer worked hard on them and deserves your audience participation. Go on now…)
  8. Without further ado…here is the winner for Steam and honorable mentions, with descriptions by Mase and our level design crew: Steam Winner Game of Kings – by Hexadoodle Checkmate. Dramatically, this playlist was the last playlist we saw when judging the competition. Just like the pivotal move in a chess match — you know, besides stalemates or dumping the pieces on the floor — this playlist bested its competition through cunning design and execution. Each level within this playlist is creatively themed around chess, its pieces and their movements. You’ll be chopping wood throughout this full complement of friendly game modes. A book-win for Hexadoodle! Steam Honorable Mentions Gold & Glory (Grab the Gold Maps) by Cautious Plastic Grab the Gold is a silly game with silly rules won by silly people. Designing levels that take advantage of this game mode’s unique characteristics is no easy feat. The creator of this playlist pulled off 15 great Grab the Gold levels in a row! Great use of the Steam Workshop with a professional presentation cemented this playlist’s honorable mention. Hatty Cup 2014 by KLJF22 One of our judges called this the “best set of Ball Game levels he’s ever played.” This creator implemented well-polished and inventive use of mechanics on each and every pitch! This playlist contains a well maintained soccer field theme on every level which really makes you feel like Pelé Beckhamington, the greatest ball game prison competitor that ever was! GOOOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLL! Duckshark Arena by Obama’s Mama A crackerjack collection of levels using every game mode, all featuring Ducksharks! Many stages actually look like Ducksharks! The final level is the definitive Duckshark Arena! There’s Ducksharks and Lasers and chaos and Ducksharks! This playlist is really fond of Ducksharks– and in the case of the preantepenultimate playlist, we are too. For this week, we’re featuring the winning playlists and giving BattleBlock Theater players a special unlock befitting of this occasion: Purrham Furbottom! All you’ll need to do is load up the game and go to an online area to unlock this gentleman. (Now, go play this Arena Feature! 9. Hey Guys and Gals, A few of us are in Japan for BitSummit (check out our posts on our blog and instagram if you haven't seen it already!) so we are on different time zones with the team back home in San Diego. Just a heads up that we're still updating the BattleBlock Theater Furbottoms Features with a new Arena and re-releasing a prisoner, but it will just be happening a little later today. Thanks for your patience! <3 Megan
  10. Friends! Foes! Friendoes! Wait, that’s not right… Arena Feature: Frenemies by MisterrQuentin Arena is back this week, so get ready to relinquish your sense of comradery! Yes, you’ll have a teammate. But is he or she really on your side or just out for that elusive MVP badge? There’ll be opponents on the battlefield, but are they rushing to hurt or help your cause (even if it's accidental assistance)? If there's anything I've learned from BattleBlock Theater, it’s that the only person you can count on is yourself. Woah, that was deep. Or depressing. Or deep? Aren't they the same thing? Anyway... If this playlist was a Tom Clancy novel, you’d be Jack Ryan and… um… I don’t know what else, because I’ve never read one of those things. The point being, you’ll be able to utilize that betrayal-jitsu you’ve been honing in co-op campaign and exact your revenge on those poor, poor friends of yours. Muahahahaha! Or, you’ll be triple teamed to death, because you made all of your friends hate you. I’d say it’s a coin flip. Good thing we're re-releasing this handsome auto-mo-buddy out of the prisoner box we call Prisondora this week. You'll need some real hot WHEELS to get away from all that betrayal and tragedy. Just visit the Furbottom's Feature Section of the game to pick him up! No need to complete a playlist, but there is much need for you to be signed in to Xbox LIVE.
