I (for some reason) decided to take note of all the different limits for every block in the level editor. This could help people plan out their levels without running into block limits halfway through. The block names are just something I came up with based on appearance.

If enough people care (and I'm not too lazy), I could make this fancier with images of each block or something. Actually, it'd be sweet if there were a counter on each block in-game letting you know how many you could use (or have used).

Original Post:

I was very surprised that there wasn't already a topic (or even a post) about this subject after searching for one.

Anyway, it seems that certain blocks have a limit on how many you can add into a level. I've never really been one to make custom levels in games but after playing this game, I decided that I wanted to remake some Super Meat Boy levels in this game. The first level I decided to do was The Kid's first stage (notorious for being one of the hardest levels in the game). But after using 64 spike blocks, I wasn't allowed to place anymore (and I had only just finished maybe 1/4th of the level). So, I tried seeing if this was a limit put in place for ALL blocks, but I was able to put over 64 generic blocks and even water blocks. Then I tried the laser beam blocks (w/e they're called) and the limit is also 64 for them. I haven't tried anything else (yet) though.

Item limits in level/map editors isn't some new thing I've seen since other games have them in place for memory reasons and whatnot, but I don't understand why BBTheater has limits on certain blocks and not others. And I don't think it would be for memory reasons because of how little detail there is in the objects compared to the more complex games out there (basically thinking of Halo).

So yeah, I'm wondering if these limits were put into place for a specific reason or if they're just arbitrary, in which case I'd really like to see it removed. If there's no reason for the limit, you're limiting (ha) people on what they can create.

Also, I'm not hating on the game for this reason. It sucks, sure, but I still love the game. Would just like an answer about this matter.

Yeah I found this annoying when I ran out of spikes and had to reformat my whole level... But I worked around it, I mean you can use other blocks. Maybe repeating the same trap over and over again won't be fun to play?

The only other blocks that cause instant death when touched are the water blocks and saw blocks, and neither of those can be placed sideways (the water ones for obvious reasons but why not the saws? sadface). Without other insta-kill blocks that can be placed sideways, I can't make this level. Also, while it would be incredibly challenging to play, it'd still be fun to make it and have such a well known Super Meat Boy level in the game. See it for yourself (first stage):

Same, but different, with the ball dispensers for Ball Game. You can only place two of those  :?

Updated the original post with a list showing the limit for every block in the level editor. I have too much time on my hands...

Anyway, I'd still also like to see a Behemoth Dev pop in here and give an answer as to why there are limits on some of these blocks (there obviously needs to be a limit on strawberry blocks and such but why spike/cloud/laser/etc blocks?). If it can't be changed in a future update, then oh well but if it can and there's no reason not to, why not?

Hi all.  These limitations are for performance reasons, although I don't know all the specifics as to why.  I know it's kind of a bummer, but there are always ways to work around the limitation (water/buzzsaw on the floor instead of spikes ).  Good Luck!

Hmm, I guess that's good enough for me. Thanks for the response Ryan.

And kickinthehead, I'll probably add the block limit info to the BBTheater wiki at some point soon (good idea btw).
